Micheladas with John’s Homemade Bloody Mary Mix Recipe

  • Servings: 2

This recipe is 2 for the price of 1 - you get the recipe for my homemade bloody mary mix AND my michelada. A michelada is basically a bloody mary that uses beer instead of vodka. It’s great for serving a crowd - you can mix up a big batch of the bloody mary mix and keep it in a pitcher so guests have the choice of a michelada or a classic bloody mary (which Rach prefers!). To make a bloody mary, just sub a couple ounces of vodka for the beer and serve in a rocks glass.

The secret ingredients that take my bloody mary mix to the next level are lemon zest and lime zest which give it extra zing and two different types of hot sauce which makes the spiciness extra flavorful. Feel free to start with less hot sauce or horseradish and add more as you go - Rach and I like ours extra spicy!

Recipe by John Cusimano and featured on Rachael Ray's Meals in Minutes.

Ingredients

  • 3 ounces tomato juice
  • 2 teaspoons Tabasco sauce, plus more to taste
1 teaspoon Frank’s Red Hot sauce, plus more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish, plus more to taste
  • A big pinch of celery salt, plus more to rim glasses
  • 1 ounce lemon juice
  • ½ tsp lemon zest
  • 1 ounce lime juice,  plus more limes cut into wedges to rim glasses and garnish
  • ½ tsp lime zest
  • Chili powder, to rim glasses
  • 2 Modelo or other light Mexican beer of choice, chilled

Directions

To make the bloody mary mix, add tomato juice, hot sauces, worcestershire sauce, prepared horseradish, celery salt, lemon juice and zest and lime juice and zest to a small pitcher. Stir to combine.

Taste the bloody mary mix and adjust the seasoning by adding more hot sauce or horseradish to suit your taste.

Combine the extra celery salt and chili powder together on a small plate. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of 2 pint glasses and dip the wet rim into the mixture of celery salt and chili powder. Fill the glasses with ice.

Divide the bloody mary mix between the glasses and then top with beer. You may have some beer leftover depending on how much ice is in your glass. Squeeze  the juice from a  wedge of lime into the glass and put the spent lime wedge into the glass to garnish. Gently stir and serve.
