Ingredients
1 cup heavy cream, optional
Pinch powdered sugar, optional
4 oz. dark chocolate (plus a little more for garnish, optional)
2 teaspoons butterscotch sauce/topping, plus more for garnish
2 cups milk
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon salt
Flaky salt, garnish, optional
Preparation
Place heavy cream in a stand mixer and whip on high speed. Add a few pinches of powdered sugar and whip until medium or stiff peaks form. If you do not have a stand mixer, you may use a handheld mixer – or if using a whisk, beat by hand. When finished, place in fridge until ready to use.
Place a small nonstick saucepot or skillet over low heat and add the dark chocolate and butterscotch. Gently stir with a whisk until melted and then slowly add the milk. Whisk until smooth and incorporated and heated through- no need to boil. When steaming, add 1/4 teaspoon of salt and stir to dissolve. Taste the hot chocolate and if you want a little more salt, add the remaining 1/4 teaspoon and stir.
Divide between 2 mugs, place a dollop of whipped cream on top and garnish with a drizzle of butterscotch sauce and/or a light dusting of flaky salt.
